Course Description
This course provides the student of biological sciences with an introduction to microbiology and some of its applications. The major topics are: structure, function, taxonomy, and growth of prokaryotes and eukaryotes; microbial metabolism; prokaryotic genetics; viruses; the role of microbes in disease and host defenses; and microbial ecology. The laboratory will study the practice and principles of microbial analysis, characterization, and identification. Prerequisite: BI 104 or instructor permission for Biology majors. No prereq for BME majors
